In early January 2025, President Biden announced a ban on new oil and gas drilling across more than 625 million acres of US coastal waters. That ban is widely expected to be repealed after President-elect Trump takes office.

“I would view it as an unsettled issue and certainly one that the new administration will continue to pursue,” Bracewell’s Ann Navaro told The New York Times.

Environmental groups are expected to challenge any repeal by the Trump administration, as was the case in the 2019 Federal District Court in Alaska ruling that a ban could not be undone without an act of Congress.
