NEW YORK – Elizabeth L. McGinley, chair of Bracewell LLP’s tax department, has been named a Northeast Trailblazer by The American Lawyer for 2022. McGinley, who advises energy clients on acquisitions, dispositions, joint ventures, and debt and equity investments, leads the firm’s multidisciplinary carbon capture practice.
McGinley is one of the nation’s leading authorities on matters related to carbon capture projects, including federal tax credits under Code section 45Q. Notably, she represents Navigator CO2 Ventures LLC in its development of the Heartland Greenway project to help customers develop carbon dioxide capture equipment, transport the captured carbon dioxide over a pipeline network, and permanently sequester up to 15 million metric tons of carbon dioxide per year in an underground sequestration site. This project is one of the first large-scale, commercially viable carbon capture and sequestration projects to be developed in the United States.
“The opportunities for different industries to work together to capture carbon dioxide and utilize it as a valuable commodity are promising,” McGinley tells The American Lawyer. “In addition, we expect financial investors to become more creative in their approach to financing the development of carbon capture in conjunction with government grants and incentives.”
