As scrutiny grows around the role of Principal Associate Deputy Attorney General (PADAG) Trent McCotter, former Department of Justice (DOJ) officials are debating whether his involvement in several high-profile matters represents a departure from the traditional responsibilities of the position. The discussion has renewed attention on the PADAG’s influence within DOJ leadership and the challenges of balancing departmental priorities, political pressures and institutional independence.
It is widely seen as one of the DOJ’s toughest jobs, Bracewell’s Seth DuCharme, who held the role during the first Trump administration, told Global Investigations Review.
“The PADAG is recognized by everyone in the department and outside the department to really speak with the authority of both the deputy attorney general and the attorney general,” DuCharme said.
