NEW YORK — The Honorable Barbara S. Jones (Ret.) will receive a Lifetime Achievement Award from The American Lawyer in recognition of her decades of public service and contributions to the legal profession. Judge Jones will receive the award at the 2026 American Lawyer Industry Awards, which will be held November 12 at Cipriani Wall Street in New York City.

Early Career as a Prosecutor

Judge Jones joined the U.S. Department of Justice in 1973 through its prestigious Honors Program. She moved to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York four years later. In 1984, she was promoted to Chief of the Organized Crime Unit, becoming the first woman ever appointed to lead a DOJ Organized Crime Strike Force. Judge Jones led a team of 15 attorneys and more than 70 agents from multiple agencies, prosecuting some of the country’s most notorious mafia bosses, including key figures in the Bonanno crime family.

Judge Jones went on to serve as Chief Assistant to Manhattan District Attorney Robert M. Morgenthau, a role she held until 1995.

Distinguished Judicial Career

In 1995, President Bill Clinton nominated her to serve as a federal district court judge in the Southern District of New York. She presided over the 1997 trail of Autumn Jackson and sentenced WorldCom co-founder and CEO Bernie Ebbers to 25 years in prison for an $11 billion accounting fraud. She also handled matters involving terrorism, public corruption and complex financial crime.

In 2012, Judge Jones presided over the challenge to Defense of Marriage Act brought by Edith Windsor, striking down the law’s denial of federal benefits to same-sex couples. The U.S. Supreme Court affirmed the decision the following year.

Career in Private Practice

In 2013, Judge Jones left the bench and entered private practice, first at Zuckerman Spaeder and later at Bracewell, where she is a member of the firm’s government enforcement and investigations practice. She served as a member of the American Bar Association’s Corporate Monitor Standards Committee, helping author the ABA-approved standards governing corporate monitorships.

Government agencies and federal courts have since appointed her to conduct monitorships and special master assignments in a number of high-profile matters, including:

  • A federal monitorship connected to the merger of three major telecommunications companies
  • Special master for the Michael Cohen privilege review
  • Independent compliance auditor for the Archdiocese of New York
  • Independent monitor of the Trump Organization
  • Independent administrator of the National Women’s Soccer League’s Players’ Restitution Fund
