The Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) developed its new batch interconnection process to manage an unprecedented wave of power demand from data centers, liquefied natural gas facilities, manufacturing projects and other large-load developments seeking access to the grid. By evaluating projects collectively rather than one at a time, ERCOT’s process is intended to better align transmission planning with rapidly evolving demand and reduce delays caused by outdated interconnection studies.
Bracewell’s Bryan Clark told the Houston Business Journal the rise of data center development, electrification of oil fields in West Texas, addition of liquefied natural gas facilities on the Gulf Coast, growth in manufacturing operations and increasing population created “an untenable situation” that needed addressed with an optimized interconnection process.
“Essentially everybody was starting to trip over each other,” Clark said. “You would have this sequential process where a load would go to the utility in a particular area, and they would conduct the studies, and in the timeframe to get those studies conducted, you may have other loads wanting to come into that same area.”
