Private equity-backed oil and gas investments may be experiencing a revival – even in renewable energy-focused Europe – following a retreat from the market in recent years. While the US sector won a clear boost from an incoming administration that was more favorable to fossil fuels than its predecessor, in Europe there are other factors at play.
After the 2014 oil price crash bankrupted many investee companies, the sector went out of fashion for many PE firms, Bracewell’s François Feuillat told PE Hub. But there are signs of a comeback in Europe, he said.
“One relatively recent phenomenon over the last, maybe three or four years that we’ve seen is the increase in new deal-by-deal sponsors who invest in energy,” said Feuillat.
