Texas Lawyer reporter Brenda Jeffreys took a look at how firms in Texas adapted their summer associates programs in light of the COVID-19 pandemic, and which Texas firms got high marks for virtual events in The American Lawyer’s 2020 Summer Associates Survey.

“Our objective of the summer program was really to help them understand the culture of the firm and get to know people,” said Jennifer Queen, Bracewell’s chief talent officer.

At the firm’s Art Night, Bracewell senior counsel Erick Sandlin, a spray-paint artist, kicked off the Zoom event by starting a painting. While Sandlin painted, the summer associates watched via live video as several partners and associates showed off the art in their homes. In some cases children and pets made appearances as extras, Queen said. And to wrap up the evening, Sandlin presented his completed work of art.

In addition to the social activities, one Bracewell summer associate also noted that the work was interesting too. “Being able to work on a project with a partner from start to finish and present it to the client was a cool experience,” he wrote.
