By designating six Mexican cartels as foreign terrorist organizations, the US government is ratcheting up the pressure on these criminal organizations. But it’s also putting more pressure on corporations to avoid providing those cartels with material support.
Bracewell’s Alamdar Hamdani, a former US Attorney and long-time counterterrorism prosecutor, told Compliance Week that new rules for federal prosecutors regarding the review of counterterrorism investigations will make it easier and faster for any US Attorney’s office in the country to investigate cartel activity.
“The Trump administration is putting a laser focus on cartels, like no administration has before,” he said. “Businesses need to be super-vigilant of who they do business within Mexico.”
