Robert Meade, a partner in Bracewell’s London office, talked with the Financial Times about the legal challenges facing fossil fuel projects in the UK.

A landmark ruling in June 2024 has emboldened environmental activists and put increasing pressure on fossil fuel projects.

Obtaining approval for oil and gas projects is still possible, as the court ruling allows authorities to approve projects so long as they have considered their environmental impact. The law also fails to specify what levels of emissions is acceptable.

“That’s a hard question that will need to be taken case by case,” said Meade.
